Trans-dermal Healing: M•SPA's Advanced Lipid Support
Healing through
the sense of touch is an integral part of the ayurvedic approach.
The use of topical herbal pastes, poultices, sachets and oils is discussed
at length in the ayurvedic texts, with much attention paid to the
formulation and preparation of these trans-dermal healing substances. The ancient ayurvedic healers understood the psychological as
well as the physical benefits of the nurturing touch. Another meaning
for the Sanskrit word for oil, sneham, is love. Massage is both infinitely
relaxing and intensely rejuvenating at the same time because of the
psychological as well as physical healing benefit it imparts.
The three sub-doshas that govern skin health-Vyana Vata,
Bhrajaka Pitta and Shleshaka Kapha--are
all balanced by abhyanga, the ayurvedic daily warm-oil massage. The
key is to use a massage oil that incorporates all the qualities mentioned
in the ayurvedic texts-the ideal massage oil should be lubricating,
nourishing, easily absorbed, balancing to all the doshas and nurturing
for body, mind and spirit.
Benefits plus convenience
While the pre-bath warm oil massage is the ideal way to enjoy the
therapeutic benefits of trans-dermal healing substances, it's also
true that a complete traditional massage does take time. Over the past few years, I have been told many, many times by
the people I see for ayurvedic appointments that they would love to
do the massage everyday, but just don't have always the time in the
mornings because of work schedules, commutes and family responsibilities. Also, some people do not like to apply oil
straight-it can be too overwhelmingly lubricating or even messy for
them-something to be done only in a massage room by a massage therapist.
So, taking these practical points into consideration, we developed
the M•SPA
Youthful Skin Advanced Lipid Support formula.
The Advanced
Lipid Support can be used on its own as a convenient means of
receiving lipid support and trans-dermal nourishment or as added deep-layer
support by those who do the ayurvedic abhyanga with a traditional
massage oil.
Potent ayurvedic herbs and oils
The Advanced
Lipid Support formula is based on the traditional ayurvedic theory
of abhyanga. Accordingly, the herbs and oils in the formula are chosen
and combined in precise proportions to give the formula all the qualities
specified in the ayurvedic texts for the ideal massage oil:
The oil extract of Shankapushpi, Gotu Kola and Sensitive Plant in
this formula help pacify Vyana Vata,
which helps to improve circulation and maintain proper tactile sensitivity.
These ayurvedic herbs nurture the different layers of the skin and
support the sweat glands.
Silk Cotton Tree, Indian Madder and Woodfordia help enhance the skin's
own ability to resist photosensitivity by pacifying Bhrajaka Pitta.
Lebbek Tree, Lodh Tree and Sacred Lotus support the skin's natural
ability to withstand allergens and environmental irritants, thus helping
the skin perform its function of acting as a barrier to the external
environment.
Shatavari, Amla, White Musale, Sesame Oil and Country Mallow provide
deep-layer nourishment to the skin, naturally enhancing energy levels,
promoting moisture balance and maintaining skin health.
This formula is rich in antioxidant herbs and oils, including Gotu
Kola, Silk Cotton Tree, Shatavari, Amla, Grapefruit, Sweet Orange,
Lemon and Basil. These help retard free radical damage and keep the
skin looking supple and youthful.
Suggested Use
The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians recommends applying this lotion all over the body after
your shower or bath. Follow the types of strokes you would when performing
abhyanga: long strokes over straight parts like your limbs and circular
strokes over rounded areas such as joints and abdomen. Use more lotion
and spend more time where nerve endings are concentrated, such as
the soles of feet, palms of hands and along the base of the fingernails.
Carry the bottle
in your purse or briefcase and use the lotion as needed through the
day for added lipid support.
