Message from the President

MAPI president and daughterThe urgent need for prevention-oriented healthcare

The events of the US and global economy in the last few weeks highlight a couple of important truths: the inescapable interconnectedness of the world family of nations and economies, and, the need for a comprehensive prevention-oriented cost-effective approach to health.

Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported last week that as the economy tightens, Americans are cutting back on health care even when they have health insurance. The costs of an illness are so great, that more and more Americans go without rather then spend on their own health.

It is time to consider the substantial cost savings of a proven prevention-oriented approach to health.

The Healing Power of Sleep

Healing Power of SleepMillions of Americans of all ages are affected by sleep problems, many with severe, chronic sleep deprivation. A round-the-clock activity-driven society has meant that many individuals habitually defer sleep to get other things done. "I'll catch up later," is, however, easier said than done. Recent research indicates that pervasive sleep deprivation can lead to more serious health problems than just a dull clouded feeling the next morning—including obesity, high blood pressure and diminished resistance to infections. While there is substantial awareness about the need for proper nutrition and exercise, many people tend to shrug off lack of sleep as not being of much consequence, and, as a result, go through life with both mind and body always performing at less than optimal levels.

According to the texts of Ayurveda, there is a relationship between the micronutrients in food and the quality of your sleep. Digestion being a cornerstone of good health, it comes as no surprise that Ayurveda considers food to play a significant role in proper sleep. The following tips and foods are considered traditional supports for a good night of rest.

Aromatherapy for Personal Balance in Every Season

Aromatherapy, in the form of floral and herbal extracts and incense, has always been an integral aspect of ayurvedic healing. From sandalwood incense to enhance the benefits of meditation to water infused with holy basil for purifying the environment, aromas have been a pleasant way to infuse the human psycho-physiology with the healing wisdom of plants.

Although single aroma incense and floral waters are not uncommon in ayurveda, it is more typical to see blends or combinations of several different aromas. The benefits? Synergy and balance.

Sleep and Adult Health

Doctor on AyurvedaBy John Peterson, MD

The ancient Ayurvedic texts descript sleep as one of the cornerstones of good health. From the Ayurvedic point of view six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep is considered to be healthy. Poor sleep can usually be traced to a Vata imbalance. The causes for insomnia include irregular routine, mental and emotional stress, pain, poor digestion, increased frequency of urination, excessive mental and physical activities (especially in the evening) daytime sleeping and, alas! old age.

Sleep and Memory

Sleep and MemoryBy Dr Mark Toomey, Medical Director, The Raj Ayurvedic Spa

It is said in Charaka, one of the ancient text of Maharishi Ayurveda, that "proper sleep brings about happiness and longevity in human beings in the same way that real knowledge brings about siddhis in yogis.

In my practice at the Raj it is common to see many people who are concerned or unhappy that as they get older that their memory is failing them.

Memory is an important for human beings. It allows us to function successfully both as a tool for everyday life, for work and and personal abilities. Even such little things as remembering where I put the car keys, can be a source of frustration or bliss.

Antidote to AgingOjas - The internal antidote to Aging

It has been said that the whole of Ayurveda is aimed at maximizing the production and maintenance of ojas.

A healthy, glowing face and a brightly, burning light in the eyes -- the glow of radiant health -- is something that is universally appealing and desirable. According to MAV this radiance and luster around the body is called ojas. Optimum ojas is the key to perfect health, balanced and blissful emotions, and even the unfolding of inner spiritual development. Ojas promotes longevity and is an internally generated antidote to aging according to Dr. Nancy Lonsdorf. It is the product of perfectly functioning digestion and metabolism. A high amount of ojas means everything we eat is transformed into toxin-free energy creating a vibrantly alert and blissful state of mind and emotions.

Sleep: The secret in the cycles of Nature

Cycles of NatureBy The Raj Vedic Health Team.

We are all familiar with the principle of “early to bed”. It’s prevalent in every culture, as well as in MAV. If you have a problem getting to bed early, at the end of kapha kala or kapha time as Maharishi Ayurveda recommends (before 10:00 PM), MAV gives profound, cosmic reasons that may inspire you to sleep earlier.

According to MAV, when the sun sets at dusk every day, there is solar energy that is retained in the earth’s atmosphere, but only until midnight. Any sleep we experience while this residual solar energy is still in the atmosphere is most nourishing, restorative, and rejuvenating, contributing to health and longevity in a powerful way. So the more sleep before midnight, the more beneficial the sleep -- even though we may have been sleeping longer after midnight -- the quality of the sleep is not as nourishing or rejuvenating as the quality of sleep before midnight.
