Do you walk and talk quickly? Have physical and mental energy that comes in bursts? Love new experiences? Changeability is one of the hallmarks of breezy Vata types. Sleep may be elusive, and you may often skip meals or keep irregular hours. Ironically, routine is one of the best ways to balance Vata.
Vata types vary in size and shape, but they generally have slender or willowy frames. Cool hands and feet are common traits, as are delicate skin and fine hair. Vata types are often extremely sensitive people who find themselves exhausted by stimulation even as they crave it. “Everything in moderation” is key for Vata.
Vata types tend to learn things quickly and forget them just as fast. When stressed, you may be prone to occasional worry and sleeplessness. But take heart! When in balance, Vata types are among the most vibrant, creative people among us.
VATA INSIGHT ONE
The three most important ways to balance Vata dosha are: routine, routine, and routine! It may feel counter to your free-spirited nature, but you’ll feel much more centered when you follow a good daily routine with three well-cooked meals (eaten at around the same time each day), plenty of rest, adequate exercise, and a regular bedtime (ideally before 10 p.m.).
VATA INSIGHT TWO
In Ayurveda, food is medicine. A Vata-pacifying diet will go a long way toward providing the warmth and nourishment that Vata types need to stay balanced. Favor warm, cooked foods (think soups and stews) and avoid cold, light, and dry food and drinks (like ice water, crackers, and cereal)—which can cause sluggish digestion among Vatas. Favor sweet, sour, and salty tastes and minimize pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes.
VATA INSIGHT THREE
Sleep can be elusive for Vata types. Set yourself up for success by going to bed early, well before ten o'clock, and rising early, before 6:00 a.m. If falling asleep is an issue and you are having occasional feelings of anxiousness or worry, try our Worry Free and Blissful Sleep one hour before bed. Supplement with Ashwagandha during the day.
VATA INSIGHT FOUR
The ancient Ayurvedic practice of abhyanga (self-massage with warm oil) is very beneficial for Vata types. The soothing self-care practice moisturizes the skin, calms the nerves, improves circulation, promotes better sleep at night, and provides a sense of wellbeing throughout the day. Try our Moisturizing Herbal Massage Oil or Youthful Skin Massage Oil.
VATA INSIGHT FIVE
Vata types need plenty of extra rest and downtime. Make sure to carve out some "me time" everyday, whether by taking time to meditate, do yoga, take a long walk with loved ones, or enjoy a warm bath before bed.
VATA INSIGHT SIX
Yoga asanas are the ideal exercise for Vata types. Skip the fast-paced flow classes and favor slow, methodical movements that calm and nourish. think grounding forward folds, relaxing restorative postures, and gentle poses that encourage the downward flow of digestion.
