Bringing Transcendental Meditation to At-Risk Communities

David Lynch Foundation logo

At Maharishi AyurVeda, we believe that good health comes from a mind and body in balance. Countless studies have shown that meditation is one of the most beneficial things you can do to restore your natural balance. That’s why we’re proud to partner with the David Lynch Foundation.

About the David Lynch Foundation (DLF)

Founded in 2005 by American filmmaker and director David Lynch, the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace brings the Transcendental Meditation® technique to vulnerable adults and children in need, including veterans with PTSD, under-resourced youth, frontline healthcare workers, women survivors of domestic violence, and police and other first responders. Of his new world peace initiative, Lynch states "We don't know what tomorrow's going to bring if we don't get peace on this planet."

The Ayurveda-Meditation Connection

Mental Health is one of the eight major branches of Ayurveda. The mind and body are intimately connected; mental health greatly impacts physical health–and vice versa. The Transcendental Meditation technique (TM) is a simple, natural meditation technique deeply steeped in the ancient Vedic tradition. Hundreds of studies show that TM can help reduce stress1, decrease blood pressure levels2, and improve brain function3.

Starting in the early 1980s, MAPI’s founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced Transcendental Meditation to the Western world available worldwide and founded Maharishi Ayurveda, met with Ayurvedic scholars, doctors and scientists for the purpose of restoring this ancient system of medicine to its full dignity.

THE AYURVEDA-MEDITATION CONNECTION

Meditate America

Meditate America is a national initiative to address the pandemic of trauma and toxic stress in the country by bringing the evidence-based, stress-reducing Transcendental Meditation® technique to under-resourced adults and children who are in need. Meditate America raises funds and supports large-scale, randomized controlled trials on the benefits of the TM® practice for addressing chronic health issues, including reducing the symptoms of PTS and suicide among veterans, lowering high blood pressure and the risk of heart disease among elderly Black and Brown populations, and reducing burnout and anxiety and improving resilience among frontline healthcare workers.

Healthy Families/Healthy Communities

Early-age trauma scars the brain and fuels poor academic performance, sickness, substance use disorder, and violent behavior. At the basis of any community-wide initiative to interrupt violence and build strong neighborhoods must be an effective program for healing the traumatized brain, particularly among the young. The David Lynch Foundation’s Healthy Family/Healthy Community national initiative partners with local government and civic organizations to bring TM at no cost to under-resourced adults and children to reduce stress, improve cognitive and brain functioning, and prevent crime and violence.
