December Week-by-Week: Resolutions for a Joyful December

December is holiday season in most parts of the world. In some people, the holidays stir feelings of happy abandon. To others, the demands of the celebration season can mean considerable stress. In this final edition of our month-by-month resolutions, let's talk about ways to make this holiday season your happiest ever!

WEEK I: This month, more than any other month in the calendar, you need to find time for yourself. The challenge is to find that time every day, Monday through Friday, however packed your schedule. Do not, however, let the quest for finding some quiet "me-time" become a source of anxiety in itself. Be on the lookout for moments you can snatch and steal from right under the nose of your work-related files and to-do lists. Use those moments to get back in touch with yourself — just like you would find time to make a quick phone call to a loved one. Get some light exercise. Drink a glass of water. Close your eyes and just sit. Even a precious few of these me-moments will bring you a great sense of calm in the chaos of Holi-daze. To turn a familiar quote around: "Don't get mad: get even-tempered."

WEEKEND IV: Go ahead; raise your glass. Of warm water, that is. Boiled water is charged with heat, becoming sharper in quality (sookshma). This sharpness allows it to cleanse the channels and penetrate deeper levels of the physiology. If you add spices to your drinking water, you get the therapeutic benefits of those spices at a deep molecular level, through aroma and taste. During Vata season — particularly holiday time — drinking plenty of spice water is a great way to cleanse the body's channels, hydrate the tissues, and flush out waste. The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians recipe for Vata Balancing Water: Boil two quarts of water for 5 minutes. Take it off the heat and add 3 leaves mint, 1/2 t. fennel seed, and 1/4 t. marshmallow root. Place the water in a thermos. Sip it throughout the day at a warm but not hot temperature.
